Dr. Thompson was educated at Brandeis University, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Medical College of Pennsylvania (Drexel University College of Medicine), before training in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Massachusetts and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and in Surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He has been on the staff of Mayo Clinic since 1988 and is currently Section Head of Endocrine Surgery. He previously served as Vice-Chair in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic and Senior Associate Dean for Surgical Affairs in the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. He has served as President of the AAES, Secretary of the IAES, and is currently Council Coordinator for the IAES and Chair of the AAES Foundation. He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed publications, serves on four editorial boards, and is the Senior Associate Editor of the World Journal of Endocrine Surgery.
